First Training Workshop for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Experts in Georgia

The training series on the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) methodology adheres to UNIDO’s wider commitment to promote Circular Economy and new growth opportunities in Georgia under the EU4Environment Action, and to assist Georgian Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to integrate sustainability factors in their strategic and daily decision-making. This is achieved by offering support in the development and implementation of green public procurement policies, the provision of tailored assistance to address waste management challenges, establish reforms in priority green economy sectors, as well as to promote ecological value-chains and product innovation amongst SMEs.

2021 started off with virtual training sessions on the RECP methodology for 10 Georgian SMEs and 15 trainee professionals working in engineering, industrial, environmental, and other related fields. The participants showed great commitment to grasp the RECP approach and to apply the methodology to improve materials and energy use efficiency, the environment, and the economic performance of SMEs. The RECP introduction workshop of the first block of the training program, in turn, was divided into two parts. The first part of the workshop was organized online on 21 December 2020, while the second part, a 2-day workshop, took place on 4-5 February 2021.

The workshops brought together company representatives from food & beverages, dairy, construction & packaging materials, and the chemicals industries, alongside with relevant trainee professionals participating in the RECP Training organized by the Energy Efficiency Centre Georgia, as the National Implementing Partner of UNIDO.

The training sessions were devoted to the presentation and discussion of issues such as: introduction to RECP, the presentation of good practices, the overall RECP working method, assessing general baseline and indicators, introduction to monitoring and targeting, initial walk-through in enterprises, team and motivation, planning and organization, and process flowsheets. The training was conducted by a UNIDO International Expert, with the assistance of local experts on RECP.

The time allocated before the second training session will be used by the trainee professionals to visit the participating companies, and to apply the lessons learned. They will do so by working together with company representatives to collect the necessary information and data which will then make the basis for the elaboration of RECP assessments of the enterprises. Next, the trainees will identify new opportunities to increase energy and water use efficiency at the company level, reduce the impact on the environment, and help achieve economic benefits by setting mechanisms to better manage environmental risks and impacts.

The next theoretical training sessions are scheduled in April 2021.
