Online course “Mastering the Emerald Network: From Legal Frameworks to Community Engagement”

The Emerald Network plays a vital role in conserving Europe’s most valuable habitats and species and supporting sustainable development. To strengthen its effective implementation across the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, the online courseMastering the Emerald Network: From Legal Frameworks to Community Engagement” offers a comprehensive and practical learning platform for policymakers, practitioners, and environmental stakeholders.

Building knowledge for effective protection

The course is designed to deepen understanding of the Emerald Network, covering its legal foundations, institutional framework, and management practices. Participants gain insight into how the Network aligns with European Union environmental legislation, particularly in relation to Natura 2000, and how it contributes to meeting national and international biodiversity commitments.

The course focuses on adaptive management, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement to help make conservation effective and inclusive. It also highlights the link between protected areas and local communities, showing how well‑managed Emerald sites can support sustainable economic activities, encourage community involvement, and build lasting support for conservation.

Course overview

The learning programme is a self‑paced 3.5‑hour course, comprising 12 modules and guiding participants from foundational concepts to practical implementation.

Modules 2-11 combine a rich mix of learning materials, including narrated presentations, animated videos, practical case studies, maps, expert interviews, further reading materials, and short self-assessment quizzes.

The course concludes with a final knowledge test, designed to assess participants’ knowledge and understanding. To earn a digital certificate of completion, learners must achieve a score of 80% or higher. After completing the course, participants are also invited to share their views through a feedback form.

Background

This course was funded by the EU under the EU4Environment Programme and developed by the World Bank with the support of Estonian, Latvian & Lithuanian Environment, SIA (ELLE) and the Institute of Landscape Ecology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (ILE) as part of the Activity on “Regional collaboration, information exchange and knowledge sharing in protecting biodiversity and natural ecosystems (the Emerald Network) in the EaP countries”.

The course is also available in Armenian, Georgian, Romanian, and Ukrainian.
