Expert Consultation on transboundary Environmental Impact Assessment Guidelines in Armenia

In Armenia, EU4Environment supported the Ministry of Environment of Armenia in developing the Guidelines on the Application of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in a Transboundary Context. In early 2020, the UNECE – the EU4Environment Implementing Partner – developed an extended outline of the Guidelines.

On 5 June 2020, the Ministry of Environment and UNECE organised a virtual Expert Consultation Meeting in relation to the Guidelines on the Application of EIA in a Transboundary Context in Armenia to discuss comments to the draft outline and the way forward. The meeting brought together 12 participants representing different departments of the Ministry, UNECE project team and consultants to UNECE.

Work on the Guidelines will continue with the help of virtual consultations while the COVID-19 related restrictions are in place. Based on the provisions of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention), the EU EIA Directive and Armenia’s forthcoming amended law on EIA, the Guidelines will provide a useful tool to guide environmental assessment procedures, including in a transboundary context.
