The workshop on “National Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030 and the National Waste Management Action Plan 2022-2026” took place on 27 May 2022 at Conference Hall of the Environmental Information and Education Centre, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (6, Archil Gelovani Ave., Tbilisi, Georgia).
The meeting objectives were:
- to validate the revised National Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030 and the National Waste Management Action Plan 2022-2026
- to involve relevant stakeholders in the final discussion on adoption of updated Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030 and National Waste Action Plan 2022-2026.
Participants
The meeting gathered 50 participants from UN Environment Programme, EU delegation; Embassies and donor organizations; Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Ministry of Finance of Georgia, Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs, Tbilisi Municipality, Government of Autonomous Republic of Ajara, Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG), EBRD, KfW, WB and CSOs.
Background
EU4Environment is providing technical assistance and stakeholder consultation in Georgia through supporting the update of the National Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030, which will incorporate modified targets and address issues of bio-degradable and hazardous waste, as well as the requirements for the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The document will incorporate relevant Action Plan 2022-2026. Both draft National Waste Strategy and the Action Plan 2022 – 2026 will be elaborated by October and the adoption process by the Government of Georgia will be initiated, including public hearing and inter-ministerial dialogue. The final draft of the National Waste Strategy and Action Plan 2022 – 2026 will be adopted by the resolution of the Government.
