Advancing the Emerald Network in Moldova: An Awareness Raising Event on Policy and Legal Aspects

The awareness-raising event was held in a hybrid format on 28 April 2023.

The objectives of the awareness-raising event related to advancing Emerald Network into policy and legal framework by conducting discussions and consultation with key stakeholders on:

  • Gap analysis of the nature conservation legislation: preliminary findings of legal perspectives in conjunction with effective species/habitat protection
  • Leverage Emerald related institutional needs to the Governmental development planning to ensure better conservation of species/habitats
  • Develop unified management plans that define more specifically the conservation objectives and allow for an effective replication across the country
  • Other feedback on improving legal and institutional aspects related to the Emerald network.

Participants

The meeting gathered around 50 participants from all interested bodies- central authority (Ministry of Environment) and subordinated entities (Moldsilva, Apele Moldovei etc.), NGO community, research/science, practitioners, etc., including other connected projects and assignments focusing on biodiversity conservation.

Background

An awareness-raising event is organized as part of the World Bank-led activities under EU4Environment Program sub-component 4.1: Support to protect biodiversity and natural ecosystems (Emerald network). Activities under this sub-component aim to advance the establishment of the Emerald Network and management of the Emerald Sites in the Eastern Partner countries. In Moldova, the activities focus on developing national capacities for ensuring the long-term survival of species and habitats listed in the Bern Convention Resolutions through an improved national legal framework and effective communication in line with European standards and best international practices.  This includes training sessions and awareness-raising events involving stakeholders responsible for the Emerald site management in the Republic of Moldova.
