The World Bank, within the EU4Environment programme, supports the government of the Republic of Moldova in expanding and strengthening the Emerald Network by providing technical expertise, improving scientific knowledge, and helping align national policies with EU standards.

The reports outline strategic and operational priorities for conserving habitats and species of community interest from 2026 to 2035, focusing on three deliberately chosen ecosystem types: wetlands, forests, and steppes.

The initiative has also facilitated stakeholder engagement, data collection, and the development of management approaches that ensure proposed Emerald Network sites meet ecological criteria and contribute effectively to biodiversity protection.

Nistrul de Jos: This plan targets a multifunctional landscape where forestry, grazing, fisheries, and crop production coexist. It proposes establishing ecological corridors, restoring wetlands, rehabilitating habitats, and developing ecotourism. Together, these actions promote sustainable landscape management while creating opportunities for local economic growth. Read the report in English and Romanian.

Codru: This plan highlights the integration of key cultural and natural attractions – such as the Hâncu, Căpriana, and Horodca Monasteries, the “Aleea Codrilor” trail, and the Nature Museum – into well-managed rural and ecotourism experiences. Recommended measures include creating marked trails, offering themed guided tours, and organizing educational activities. The goal is to strengthen the local economy, reduce environmental pressures, and advance environmental education, while preserving traditional practices compatible with conservation. Vrănești: This plan proposes restoration and conservation actions to be integrated within local and district development strategies, ensuring coherent land-use planning, improved infrastructure, sustainable economic benefits, and habitat protection. The measures focus on aligning infrastructure and agriculture with conservation objectives, promoting ecotourism and sustainable practices, and establishing coordinated oversight.
