The EU Green Week 2020 took place at the EU level on 19-22 October 2020 on the theme of nature and biodiversity. After the adoption of a new EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 in May, Green Week highlighted the contribution biodiversity can make to society and the economy, and the role it can play in supporting and stimulating recovery in a post-pandemic world, bringing jobs and sustainable growth. The new strategy shows how the recovery is an opportunity for a fresh start, in the knowledge that transformative change is possible.
This year’s Green Week also acted as a milestone on the path to the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, now planned for 2021, where world leaders will adopt a 10-year action plan for biodiversity – a new global deal for people and nature.
The Republic of Moldova became the partner of the EU Green Week 2020 through the EU4Environment in Moldova. Among other activities, the EU4Environment in Moldova contributed to the launch of the separate waste collection for recycling in the central body of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration with a similar activity. This launch is in line with a new activity of development of the National Program on Waste Management supported by EU4Environment that will integrate circular economy and waste recycling objectives and indicators. The need of the State protected natural areas in Moldova management improvement was presented as planned implementation under the Result 4 on protected areas, biodiversity, forest and ecosystem services.
The campaign contributed to a better visibility of EU4Environment and its actions in Moldova, promotion of its Results, and plans. The event got a considerable media coverage and had a follow-up with a EU Debates Café on a selected environmental topic.
